Reminescent of the famous studies by Remington, this Southern Cavalry man has arrived by forced march ahead of his main force to find the Union troops already advancing at an alarming pace. He and his group begin to fire at the enemy and save the day for the others who will be arriving shortly.

While firing intensely, this soldier is caught during the moment of reloading, as displayed by the twisting movement of his body as he reaches around his back to his ammunition. One can see that even then he continues to look directly at his target.

From Dr. Baret's US Civil War collection.
